Creatures of the World

As a base, it contains analogous animals and plants to those that are found on Earth. The planet also contains a rich and diverse fantasy world with a large number of sentient beings. Due to long ages of magic use, there are also a large number of entities, both transcendental and limited, who have, through various means, become inhabitants of the physical realm.

Native Sentient Races

Vulpans

  • Vulpans are slender in build and petite in size. They have medium length, reddish brown fur (white on the throat and belly), bushy tails, and moveable, pointed ears. They have short, angular muzzles that give them a fox-like appearance.
  • Male
    • Height: 5 feet 8 inches
    • Weight: 140 pounds
  • Female
    • Height: 5 feet 4 inches
    • Weight: 125 pounds
  • Natural Life Span: 650 years
  • Hair Color: Follows natural fox types – Red fox, Silver fox, Fennec, Arctic fox
  • Eye Color: shades of brown or green, with notable additions of purple and blue, white ones always have blue eyes
  • Notable Characteristics: Vulpans are graceful and exotic. They are also quite clever and tend to be mischievous. Many of them are minor magicians even without training, but they are not “shape shifters”.

Humans

  • People used to be shorter – this is well documented. I assume that the reader is rather familiar with this species, and knows where to find appropriate resources.
  • Male
    • Height: 5 feet 10 inches
    • Weight: 200 pounds
  • Female
    • Height: 5 feet 5 inches
    • Weight: 160 pounds
  • Natural Life Span: 150 years
  • Hair color: varies, but generally limited to earth tones: shades of black, brown, reddish-brown, and white.
  • Eye color: varies
  • Notable Characteristics: Humans are very adaptable, and come in a wide range of sizes and colorations. The average height and weight are very misleading.

Elves

  • Elves are taller than humans and have slenderer frames. They have pointed ears and larger almond shaped eyes. They are always in one of three subgroups, which don’t get along well with each other.
    • Dark Elves: Black hair, black eyes, and “white” skin.
    • Wood Elves: Blond hair, green eyes, and tan skin.
    • Grey Elves: Silver hair, gray eyes, and very pale skin.
  • Male
    • Height: 6 feet 2 inches
    • Weight: 190 pounds
  • Female
    • Height: 5 feet 8 inches
    • Weight: 150 pounds
  • Natural Life Span: 2000 years
  • Notable Characteristics: Elves are graceful, intelligent, and dexterous. They make up for a long life span with a startlingly low birth rate.

Dwarves

  • Dwarves are shorter than humans and have stouter frames. It is difficult for non-dwarves to differentiate between the genders.
    • Height: 4 feet 6 inches
    • Weight: 220 pounds
  • Natural Life Span: 500 years
  • Hair color: varies, but predominantly shades of reddish-brown.
  • Eye color: shades of black, brown, and gray
  • Notable Characteristics: Dwarves are stocky, sturdy, and tough. They can put up with more physical abuse than just about anything else. They tend to be grouchy, and slow with their friendship.

Gnomes

  • Gnomes are shorter than humans, but have similar frames.
  • Male
    • Height: 3 feet 8 inches
    • Weight: 95 pounds
  • Female
    • Height: 3 feet 2 inches
    • Weight: 75 pounds
  • Natural Life Span: 200 years
  • Hair color: brown
  • Eye color: brown
  • Notable Characteristics: Gnomes are intelligent and clever, but fairly timid. They have no magical ability whatsoever.

Lupans

  • The lupans are similar to humans in build and size. They have medium length gray fur with some tan and black hairs sprinkled through, furry tails (though not as bushy as the vulpans), and large, moveable, pointed ears. They have longer, blunt muzzles that give them a wolf-like appearance.
  • Male
    • Height: 5 feet 11 inches
    • Weight: 205 pounds
  • Female
    • Height: 5 feet 8 inches
    • Weight: 165 pounds
  • Natural Life Span: 120 years
  • Hair color: usually gray/black/tan mix. Occasionally all black, rarely all white.
  • Eye color: shades of yellow, green, brown, white ones always have blue eyes
  • Notable Characteristics: Lupans are strong and intelligent. They form small, close family groups and defend their territory vigorously. An unfortunate susceptibility to rabies has left them with an undeserved reputation as being bloodthirsty. They are not “shape shifters” and are not affected by the phase of the moon.

Feilans

  • The Feilans are similar to humans in build and size. They have short fur in a variety of colors and patterns, small, moveable, pointed ears, and short, blunt muzzles that give them the appearance of a number of large cats. They have razor sharp retractable claws on their fingers and toes.
  • Male
    • Height: 5 feet 9 inches
    • Weight: 180 pounds
  • Female
    • Height: 5 feet 6 inches
    • Weight: 140 pounds
  • Natural Life Span: 150 years
  • Hair Color: varies.
  • Eye Color: usually yellow, occasionally shades of brown
  • Notable Characteristics: Feilans are graceful, willful, and independent. They exhibit almost as wide of a range of sizes as humans do, so the averages given above are misleading. They are not “shape shifters”.

Ogres

  • The largest of the humanoid sentient races, ogres are powerful but somewhat unintelligent brutes.
  • Male
    • Height: 7 feet 6 inches
    • Weight: 375 pounds
  • Female
    • Height: 7 feet 4 inches
    • Weight: 350 pounds
  • Natural Life Span: 70 years
  • Hair color: black
  • Eye color: black
  • Notable Characteristics: Big, strong, dumb, ugly. Calling them “evil” is not appropriate, as they are really not intelligent enough to be evil. They are most definitely dangerous.

Troglodytes

  • Second largest of the humanoid sentient races, only slightly smaller than ogres, Troglodytes are highly intelligent, cave-dwelling creatures. They are very territorial but not generally violent and certainly not “evil” in the classic sense.
  • Male
    • Height: 7 feet
    • Weight: 300 pounds
  • Female
    • Height: 6 feet 10 inches
    • Weight: 280 pounds
  • Natural Life Span: 80 years
  • Hair color: none
  • Eye color: brown
  • Notable Characteristics: Troglodytes have no magical ability at all, and therefore end up developing technology insteed.

Goblins

  • Goblins are a humanoid race that is slightly taller than dwarves with a similar overall build. They have large, pointed ears, pig like snouts with dirty yellow teeth, and no hair. Large, nearly round eyes enable them to see quite well in the dark.
  • Males
    • Height: 5 feet 0 inches
    • Weight: 220 pounds
  • Females
    • Height: 4 feet 9 inches
    • Weight: 200 pounds
  • Natural Life Span: 100 years
  • Hair color: none.
  • Eye color: black or dark brown
  • Notable Characteristics: Goblins are nearly as sturdy as dwarves. They are not overly intelligent, and tend to be aggressive and territorial. They are intelligent enough to make useful slaves.

Trolls

  • Trolls are very similar to humans in size and build. They do not have hair, and are somewhat stronger for their size than humans. They have sharp claws, and heal very rapidly. Although tales of their “regenerative” abilities are greatly exaggerated, they can re-grow lost limbs if the bleeding is stopped in time.
  • Male
    • Height: 5 feet 8 inches
    • Weight: 190 pounds
  • Female
    • Height: 5 feet 6 inches
    • Weight: 150 pounds
  • Natural Life Span: 100 years
  • Hair color: none.
  • Eye color: black.
  • Notable Characteristics: Trolls are strong and fearsome predators. They are only slightly more intelligent than ogres, but are less bright than goblins. They heal much more quickly than most other races, and can re-grow lost limbs if they don’t die in the meantime. They do not “regenerate”, and a severed body part will not grow into a clone of the original. Decapitation is invariably fatal, as is excessive damage to the torso, and they can and will bleed to death. They take an inordinate amount of damage from burns and fire.

Other sentient races

Unicorns
•Unicorns are horse-like creatures with a single horn growing from the forehead. They are intelligent, but flighty. Size is that of a small horse or a large pony. Color is always white or black.

Dragons
•Dragons are large, winged lizard-like reptiles that can fly. They are very intelligent and many are powerful magicians. They come in a large range of colors, but the color has no bearing on the abilities or demeanor of the individual.

Wyrms
•Wyrms are very large, vaguely snakelike reptiles. They have vestigial wings, but cannot fly without magical assistance. Many of them are powerful magicians. Like dragons, they also come in a large range of colors, but the color has no bearing on the abilities or demeanor of the individual.

Elementals

  • Earth elementals have no special names. They are nominally humanoid piles of animated stone.
  • Air elementals have very little in the way of a perceptible physical form. They are most noticeable by the effects that they have on their surroundings.
  • Fire elementals manifest as a living, moving column of flame.
  • Water elementals are nominally humanoid most of the time, but due to their fluid nature, they can assume many appearances. Regardless of the shape, they always appear as an uncontained mass of water.
  • Ghosts [Astral]. Far from being the spirits of departed people, ghosts are actually the native inhabitants of the astral plane. They will actively pretend to be human, though, if they feel it will further their goals.
  • Will of the Wisp [Lightning]. This being appears as a glowing, floating ball or ellipse of green or bluish green. They may or may not appear to be burning. They are not particularly intelligent, and are attracted to metal (which provides them a conduit back to their home). They are dangerous and can attack with fire and electricity when threatened.
  • The border plane of ice is unusual in that it has some analogous creatures to those found in the physical world.
    • Winter wolves. These are very large, white, wolf-like creatures with blue eyes. They can exhale blasts of astoundingly cold air to defend themselves. Their fur is rich and much warmer than a normal wolf’s. Their behavior is otherwise similar to common wolves.
    • Frost elk, snow hares, ice foxes. These are white furred, blue-eyed analogs of the physical world elk, hares, and foxes. Ice foxes are nearly the size of a physical world wolf.

Demons
These are moderately powerful, independent evil beings from any the various planes. Most demons can only arrive in the physical realm by being summoned, although there are some that are native. They come in a mind-boggling array of shapes and sizes.

Fiends
Like demons, Fiends are powerful, independent, evil beings from the any the various planes. Unlike demons, Fiends arrive in the physical world by their own magic and seek to follow out their own dark agendas.
